A half-length winner in his first start, Lord Nelson beat another familiar name in that race in Calculator. But since then, the colt's career has had many up and downs. He was entered in the FrontRunner Stakes in his second start, finishing 4 3/4 lengths behind winner (and eventual 2-year-old champion) American Pharoah before winning the Speakeasy Stakes by 6 3/4 lengths. His 2-year-oid season finale should have a line drawn through it as he had problems when he broke from the gate and was only able to close from last shortly after the break to fifth at the finish.

In his 3-year-old debut, Lord Nelson was cut back to a sprint distance for this graded stakes event and it helped him. He was able to sneak up on Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red in the final strides of the race, getting his first Grade 2 victory in the San Vicente Stakes. The colt then finished fourth in the San Felipe at Santa Anita and second in the Bay Shore at Aqueduct before heading to Churchill Downs where he finished fourth in the Pat Day Mile on the first Saturday in May.
Lord Nelson didn't race again until Dec. 26 when he finished third in the Malibu Stakes behind eventual sprint champion Runhappy. In 2016 Lord Nelson has reeled off three consecutive victories beginning June 3, including wins in the Grade 1 Triple Bend and the Grade 1 Bing Crosby.
Lord Nelson was a $340,000 Keeneland Yearling sale purchase and is from Pulpit's second to last crop. Lord Nelson is the first foal out of African Jade, who was unplaced in two starts in France. Africian Jade is a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner and Argentina champion Miss Linda, who is also a half sister to fellow champion Mr. Nacho.
