Lone Sailor was unplaced in his career debut, but bounced back to win his second race by 11 lengths in September at Saratoga Race Course. He subsequently ran third in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland before finishing second by a head in the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs. After a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, Lone Sailor was given a short break.
Lone Sailor was unplaced in his career debut, but bounced back to win his second race by 11 lengths in September at Saratoga Race Course. He subsequently ran third in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland before finishing second by a head in the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs. He returned in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes and finished a well-beaten ninth before a confidence-building runner-up finish in an allowance race on Feb. 19 at Fair Grounds set him up for another try in stakes competition.
Lone Sailor ran his heart out in the Grade 2, $1 million Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby and came up just short when running second to Noble Indy. The 40 points give him 42 toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby, which typically is sufficient to lock up a spot in the starting gate for the run for the roses.
After running eighth in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness Stakes, Lone Sailor got some class relief when he was entered in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby on June 23 at Thistledown. He ran a big race in the Ohio Derby, closing from off the pace to finish second to Core Beliefs in a thrilling finish. In his next start, Lone Sailor finished third in the Betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes on July 29 behind Good Magic and Bravazo. He then picked up another placing in a graded stakes for 3-year-olds on Sept. 2, settling for second behind runaway winner Limation in the Grade 3 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.
Shipped to Remington Park for the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby on Sept. 30, Lone Sailor broke through with his first graded stakes score, taking the 1 1/16-mile race in a thriller as he mounted a sustained drive from well off the pace under James Graham and edged fellow closer Believe in Royalty by a nose.
Lone Sailor hails from a powerful female family anchored by his fourth dam (maternal great-great-grandmother), 1983 Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee, the dam of champion Althea among seven graded stakes winners, including Lone Sailor's third dam (maternal great-grandmother), Aishah, by Alydar. Lone Sailor's grandam (maternal grandmother) is Grade 1 winner Aldiza, by Storm Cat.
