Local Hero finished second twice in as many starts as a 2-year-old before breaking through with a win in his third race in his 2017 debut. Trainer Steve Asmussen then tested him in a stakes race on the road to the Kentucky Derby, and Local Hero finished third in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds.
