Up until Kaigun won the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes in August 2014, he probably was best known as the opponent who gave Wise Dan a test in the stretch of the Maker's 46 Mile Stakes earlier that year when finishing a game second.
The Play the King was a breakthrough first stakes win for Kaigun, who followed with a strong runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile Stakes. Kaigun would go on to win two more graded stakes through spring 2017, and place in six others.
