Joking broke his maiden at age 3 in his third career start and has spent most of his career to date running in allowance and claiming level races, with a runner-up finish in his only stakes try prior to 2016. He made his return to the stakes ranks in May 2016, winning the Diablo Stakes at Belmont Park, and duplicated that effort when victorious in the Grade 2 True North Stakes in June in his graded stakes debut. He was given a rest after that and resurfaced in October when winning the Grade 1, $350,000 Vosburgh Stakes and a place in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Joking is a son of Distorted Humor out of the A.P. Indy mare Spun Silk. He was bred by global racing leader Darley, the breeding operation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. Joking's current owner-trainer, Charlton Baker, claimed him for $20,000 in January 2014.
