Imperia finished second in his career debut but returned five weeks later to win the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes on the turf at Belmont Park. The victory cemented his credentials as a contender for the 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. After finishing 10th in the Juvenile Turf, Imperia showed his talent on dirt when he rallied down the Churchill Downs stretch in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes to finish a close second to El Kabeir.
Imperia's dam (mother) is multiple Grade 1 winner Cocoa Beach, runner-up to Zenyatta in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic.
