Iliad emerged as a contender on the trail for the 2017 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands when he impressively won the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park on Feb. 12.
The Ghostzapper ridgling, owned by Kaleem Shah and trained by two-time Kentucky Derby-winning conditioner Doug O'Neill, broke his maiden in his second career start in December at Los Alamitos Race Course. He then trained up to the San Vicente and showed little rust from a nearly two-month layoff, winning by 3 1/2 lengths.

Iliad took the next step as a Kentucky Derby contender in the March 11 San Felipe Stakes, his first start in a route race. He challenged pacesetter Mastery through the far turn but could not keep up, settling for second but earning 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points for the effort.
