Hofburg ran fourth in his career debut in September 2017 as a 2-year-old debuting at Saratoga Race Course. He returned six months later a more mature, improved racehorse and won a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight race for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott at Gulfstream Park. The Juddmonte Farms homebred, a half-brother (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) to four-time Grade 1 winner Emollient, was then given a stern class test when stepping all the way up to Grade 1 competition for the Xpressbet Florida Derby.

Hofburg ran very well in his stakes debut, rallying from off the pace to finish second to Holy Bull Stakes winner Audible. The runner-up finish earned Hofburg 40 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, which qualified him for the first jewel of the Triple Crown.
In the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, Hofburg had to steady twice but kept running in the stretch and finished a respectable seventh. With less traffic to navigate in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, Hofburg showed his class with a determined third-place finish behind Triple Crown winner Justify.
Hofburg was given a short break after the Belmont. He returned in the Curlin Stakes on July 27 at Saratoga Race Course and took care of business with a five-length runaway victory that gave Hofburg his first stakes win and set him up for the Travers Stakes in August.
