A multiple Group 1 winner in Argentina, Hi Happy was unplaced in his first three starts in the U.S. while racing in Grade 2 and Grade 1 races. He finished third in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Stakes in April 2017 but did not race again that year.

The chestnut Pure Prize horse returned as a 6-year-old for new trainer Todd Pletcher and finished third, beaten by a length, in the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on Feb. 10. He earned his first North American victory in his next start when he proved much the best in the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes, also at Gulfstream Park. He subsequently posted his first Grade 1 win in the Man o' War Stakes on May 12 at Belmont Park.
