After going winless in three starts as a 2-year-old, Hence won his first start of 2017 on Jan. 16 at Oaklawn Park. The Calumet Farm homebred then tried stakes company in the Feb. 20 Southwest Stakes in Hot Springs, but never threatened, finishing seventh of 12.
Trainer Steve Asmussen shipped Hence to Sunland Park in New Mexico for another stakes try, and Hence rebounded impressively by pulling away to a 3 ¾-length win in the $800,000 Sunland Derby on March 26. He earned 50 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands with the win.

After unplaced finishes in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and the Preakness Stakes, Hence won the Grade 3 Iowa Derby to regain his winning form. He made his next start in the Grade 1 betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes on July 30, facing several horses he'd competed against during his Triple Crown run. Hence was never involved in the race and finished last of seven in a dull effort.
