Hawaakom, a late-running son of 2007 Belmont Stakes winner Jazil, broke his maiden in his second career start in 2012 at age 3, and then tried stakes company in his next outing only to finish ninth in the Lecomte Stakes. By 2014 and 2015, he was racing in claiming events, but he gradually worked his way up into allowance optional claiming races and then jumped back into stakes company again with a third in the Maxxam Gold Cup in early 2016.

By 2014 and 2015, he was racing in claiming events, but he gradually worked his way up into allowance optional claiming races and then jumped back into stakes company again with a third in the Maxxam Gold Cup in early 2016.
The gelding then continued to compete in stakes, with the occasional allowance start, and tallied several placings in graded stakes while winning a listed stakes at Mountaineer Park in summer 2016 and then one at Fair Grounds in early 2017.
In his next 2017 start, Hawaakom finished second to eventual Horse of the Year Gun Runner in the Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park, but then was unplaced in his next six starts, all stakes. He opened 2018 with a third in the listed Louisiana Handicap at Fair Grounds – a race he won the year before – and then broke through with his first graded stakes score in the Razorback back at Oaklawn under a rail-skimming ride from Corey Lanerie.
