Govenor Charlie broke his maiden by a neck in his second start before punching his ticket to the Kentucky Derby (G1) with an easy five length win in the Sunland Derby (G3), a 50-point prep race in the Road to the Kentucky Derby series. However, he skipped the Kentucky Derby and ran in the Preakness Stakes (G1), where he finished eighth.
