Free Rose, a Munnings gelding, won one of six starts to begin his career but thrived once switched to turf. After winning a starter allowance on the Keeneland grass during spring 2016, and then running third in a Churchill Downs allowance, Free Rose was transferred to California and trainer Richard Baltas. He subsequently scored back-to-back graded stakes wins as a 3-year-old during Del Mar’s summer meet, taking the La Jolla Handicap and then the Del Mar Derby.
