Japanese-bred Epicharis won the first four starts of his career in his home country including the Hyacinth Stakes in February 2017. That win gave him 50 points toward the Kentucky Derby. He then traveled to Dubai, where he finished a close second in the United Arab Emirates Derby, caught at the wire by Thunder Snow. Epicharis earned 40 more Kentucky Derby points in the UAE Derby, but was removed from the Kentucky Derby leaderboard the next day and is not targeting the May 6 classic.
Epicharis is a grandson of Sunday Silence, the 1989 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner.
