Epical won his career debut in January 2018 on the grass at Santa Anita Park before testing the stakes waters in the El Camino Real Derby on the Kentucky Derby trail, finishing seventh. He finished second once and third once in his next five races before a change in tactics in a front-running 6 ¾-length allowance victory in November at Del Mar. He closed out his 2018 season with another front-running allowance win on Dec. 28 at Santa Anita.
