El Areeb arrived as a 2017 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands contender on the second day of the new year, romping by 11 1/4 lengths in the Grade 3 Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct. He followed by answering the test on a fast track in the Grade 3 Withers Stakes in which he again proved much the best.
El Areeb disappointed as the heavy favorite in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes when he finished third behind winner J Boys Echo and runner-up Cloud Computing.

The Exchange Rate colt, owned by M M G Stables, LLC, and trained by Cathal Lynch, entered the Jerome off of two open-length wins at Laurel Park, including a 5 1/4-length score in the James Lewis III Stakes. Ridden by Trevor McCarthy, El Areeb sat off of earlay leader and pacesetter Takaful in the backstretch before taking charge entering the far turn and drawing clear to an impressive win over a muddy, sealed track.
A $340,000 purchase as a juvenile, the colt was bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Farms LLC.
