After winning back-to-back starts in May and June 2018, Desert Stone was tested in stakes competition and, for the most part, held his own. He placed three times in nine stakes between July 2018 and May 2019, including a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March 2019.
After a seven-month layoff, Desert Stone returned for his 2020 debut in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes Jan. 4 at Santa Anita. The 5-year-old Fastnet Rock horse closed powerfully to complete a last-to-first rally for a half-length win over graded stakes winner Cleopatra’s Stone.
