Core Beliefs finished third in the first two starts of his career before stretching out in distance for the first time and winning a maiden special weight race at Santa Anita Park by 3 1/4 lengths on March 8. He made his stakes debut in the Grade 1 Santa Anita derby and finished well for third in a race that very likely featured two of the top five choices for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.

Core Beliefs made his next start in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on May 12 and finished second by a length and a half behind Blended Citizen. He subsequently earned his first stakes win in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby on June 23 at Thistledown, where he fought bravely in the final strides to hold off hard-charging Lone Sailor by a nose.
Trainer Peter Eurton then shipped Core Beliefs to Monmouth Park for his next start in the Grade 1 Betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes on July 29. He made a rallying move along the rail through the far turn but flattened out in the stretch to finish fourth. Core Beliefs faded to fifth in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby in his final start as a 3-year-old.
Core Beliefs made his 4-year-old in the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap. He seized command in early stretch and held off a determined Silver Dust to prevail.
