Complexity won his career debut on Sept. 3, 2018 at Saratoga Race Course, where he led from start to finish en route to a 4 1/2-length lead. He used the same tactics in his stakes debut in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes on Oct. 6 when he surged clear in the stretch and coasted to a dominant victory.

Complexity faded in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and finished 10^th after setting the early pace.

The Maclean’s Music colt made his 3-year-old bow in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes, but he faded late and finished 11^th In his first start off a seven-month layoff. He rebounded to win an allowance-optional claiming race Nov. 20. 2019, at Aqueduct by 7 ¼ lengths. He wrapped up a three-race, 3-year-old season with a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Complexity made his first start of 2020 a winning won when he rolled to a 2 ¼-length score in an allowance-optional claiming race July 2 at Belmont Park. He followed with a runner-up finish on a sloppy track in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes Presented by America’s Best Racing, beaten after dueling for the early lead by deep closer Win Win Win by a half-length.

Complexity regained his stakes-winning form in his next start when he turned back Grade 1 winner Code of Honor in the stretch to win the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap by 2 ¼ lengths at Belmont Park Oct. 3.

Complexity is a half-brother to graded stakes winner Valadorna.
