Taking the rest of the year off after breaking his maiden at Sartoga in late August, Commissioner won an allowance race over the highly regarded Top Billing at Gulfstream in January.

Commissioner ran sixth in the Fountain of Youth over a speed favoring track before a third-place finish in the Sunland Derby a little over a month later. After a disappointing effort in the Arkansas Derby, Commissioner finished second behind the impressive Tonalist in the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont. Four weeks later Commissioner again finished second to Tonalist, this time by a head in the Belmont Stakes.

The WinStar Farm homebred is by Horse of the Year A.P. Indy and out of stakes winner Flaming Heart. He is a half-brother to Laugh Track, who finished second in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Sprint.
