Collected won his career debut on the grass at Santa Anita Park before finishing second in the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes going a mile on the turf at Del Mar.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert tested Collected on the main track in his 3-year-old debut, and the chestnut colt responded with a victory in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, a steppingstone on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

After a disappointing fourth-place finish as the favorite in the 2016 Grade 3 Southwest Stakes, Collected bounced back with victories in the Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes and the Grade 3 Coolmore Lexington Stakes but then finished 10th in the Preakness in his final start at 3.

Collected returned on April 1, 2017, in the Santana Mile Stakes and won by 3 3/4 lengths at Santa Anita Park. After a win in the Grade 2 Californian Stakes later in April, Collected rolled to a 14-length romp in the Grade 3 Precisionist Stakes on June 24. He then punched his Breeders' Cup Classic ticket and cemented his status as one of the top older horses in training by holding off champion Arrogate to win the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes in August at Del Mar.

Collected ran well in the Breeders' Cup Classic, pressuring Gun Runner early before fading late to finish second, 1 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher West Coast.

Collected targeted the San Antonio Stakes on Santa Anita Park’s opening-day Dec. 26 card for his next start, using it as a possible prep for the second running of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational in late January 2018. However, he ran a disappointing third behind Giant Expectations and Accelerate.

A $170,000 purchase by owner Speedway Stable at a 2-year-olds in training sale, Collected is one of two winners from as many starters out of the winning Johannesburg mare Helena Bay and is from the family of European champion and influential sire Blushing Groom.
