Coachwhip opened her career with back-to-back victories at Golden Gate Fields before running second there in the Miss America Stakes in December 2017. She closed her 3-year-old season with a seventh-place finish in the Grade 1 American Oaks.
Winless in six races in 2018, Coachwhip finished second twice, including the Golden Poppy Stakes at Golden Gate, and third twice during her 4-year-old season.

She finished third in a stakes at Fair Grounds in February and third in the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes in April at Keeneland before trying a synthetic surface in her main track debut in the Grade 3 Arlington Matron Stakes on June 1 at Arlington International Racecourse. Coachwhip seized command in the stretch of the Arlington Matron and powered clear to win by 3 ½ lengths.
