A visually impressive winner in his first career start, Capo Bastone was trained by John Sadler for owner Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners at two. The Street Boss colt finished third in both the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes as a juvenile.

At three, Capo Bastone was transferred to trainer Todd Pletcher. After a second place finish in the Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes, he earned his first career graded stakes win in the Grade 1 King's Bishop Stakes in August 2013 at Saratoga Race Course. He did not transfer his form to the turf when tried in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, and he ran 10th in the Cigar Mile to finish the year. In 2014 the colt finished sixth in his first try.
