Trainer Kellyn Gorder tested Bourbon Courage in graded stakes after he posted dominant victories in each of his first two starts. The Lion Heart colt finished fourth in the 2012 Derby Trial Stakes (G3) in his third career start and later ran a close second to Macho Macho in the West Virginia Derby (G2). Bourbon Courage earned a breakthrough stakes win when winning the Super Derby (G2) by five lengths to stamp himself one to watch moving forward.

The colt performed well in graded stakes over the next two years and returned off a layoff to win a 6-furlong allowance race at Keeneland in October 2014. The result was impressive enough for his connections to send the horse to the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
Bourbon Courage was purchased for $15,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale of selected yearlings.
