After making his first three starts on dirt and finishing no better than fifth, Blended Citizen switched to the grass and finished third before a breakthrough win in his fifth career start. He subsequently ran fourth, beaten by 2 1/2 lengths , in the Eddie Logan Stakes in his first try in a stakes race. After finishing third in the El Camino Real Derby on the synthetic surface at Golden Gate Fields, which earned Blended Citizen points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, the bay colt was pointed to the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park.

Needed addition points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby, Blended Citizen was entered in the Grade 2 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and rallied to finish fifth of 14 in a solid performance that left him on the outside looking in on Derby day. Blended Citizen instead made his next start in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes and closed powerfully to pick up his first win on a dirt main track and cement his status as a contender for the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets.
