Big John B spent much of his career in allowance and high-level claiming races before trying his first stakes as a 5-year-old in the summer of 2014. He won that race, the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap, and finished third in the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship in his next start.

After an unplaced finish in the Breeders' Cup Turf, the gelding was shelved until April of 2015. In his second start of the year Big John B won a starter handicap before reeling off a pair of graded stakes wins in the Cougar II Handicap and the Del Mar Handicap. The latter earned him a spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf starting gate.
Big John B is by Hard Spun, out of the multiple graded stakes-placed Doneraile Court mare Baldomera. He is a half-brother to graded stakes winner Circle Unbroken. The Florida-bred Big John B was purchased at a 2-year-olds in training sale and has earned more than $700,000 to date.
