Big Bend, a Tom Proctor-trained Union Rags colt, raced on dirt for his first four career starts without winning but picked up his form early in his 3-year-old season when switched to turf. He broke his maiden in his first start on grass at Tampa Bay Downs in February, and after three winless starts took a 1 ½-mile allowance optional claiming race at Delaware Park by four lengths in June. That prompted Proctor to send Big Bend to a stakes race at Kentucky Downs, where he won the 1 5/16-mile Dueling Grounds Derby.
