Donegal Racing’s Ballagh Rocks, a Stormy Atlantic colt, broke his maiden in his fifth start in September 2016, and after one unplaced effort, he commenced to win three straight allowance races during the fall and winter. He tested stakes company for the first time in April 2017, finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland, and followed that with a seventh-place effort in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs in May.

On June 18, the Bill Mott trainee broke through with his first stakes win in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park, holding off Projected by a neck. He then put forth two consecutive good efforts against top-class turf milers, finishing third to World Approval and Time Test in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga in August and third again, this time to Suedois and Heart to Heart, in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland in October.
