Axelrod, a Warrior’s Reward colt, won his second career start in a maiden claiming race at Del Mar in August 2017 and then competed in allowance optional claiming races and minor stakes for several months, picking up another win, before starting in the Grade 3 Affirmed Stakes in June 2018. The Michael McCarthy-trained colt finished second to Draft Pick in that race, giving owner Slam Dunk Racing enough confidence to ship him to Indiana Grand for the Grade 3 Indiana Derby on July 14.

Sent off at 12.40-1 odds, Axelrod surged late to defeat Trigger Warning by a head for his first stakes win.
The colt next proved that his Indiana Derby win was no fluke, shipping to Parx Racing for his next start in the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes and dominating the race with Joe Bravo aboard. He posted a four-length win over Diamond King to improve his career record to four wins in nine starts, with earnings over $540,000.
