Appealing Tale broke his maiden at age 2 in his third try and spent the next year and a half at the allowance level. The gelding made an unsuccessful stakes debut in May 2014 season but did finish third in the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes two starts later. He finished second in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes in his next start but Appealing Tale did not reappear at the graded stakes level until June 2015.

He then finished second in the Grade 1 Triple Bend and third in the San Diego Handicap before finally breaking through with a win in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes. He finished his season with a win in the Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park.
Appealing Tale is a son of successful sire Tale of the Cat, out of the Unbridled's Song mare Appealing Bride, making him a half-brother to stakes winner Colerful Bride. He was bought for $95,000 as a 2-year-old in training.
