Kaleem Shah’s homebred American Gal won her first two starts in Southern California as a juvenile, including a listed stakes, and was the post-time favorite for the 2016 Winery Hands Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, where she finished third. The daughter of Concord Point then finished second to Abel Tasman in the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes to close out her 2-year-old season, and did not return to the track until July 2017.

Making her first start for trainer Simon Callaghan, American Gal stumbled at the start but overcame that as well as a contested early pace to pull away and win the Grade 3 Victory Ride Stakes at Belmont Park by 4 ¾ lengths. She followed with an equally impressive runaway victory in the Grade 1 Longines Test Stakes on Aug. 5 at Saratoga in her final start at three.
American Gal set the tempo in her 2018 debut in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland but faded late to finish fourth by a neck in a thrilling finish. She showed she was back to her best in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard, when she outdueled Finley'sluckycharm on her home track and pulled away to win by two lengths.
