Air Strike finished second once and third once in his first three races before a breakthrough victory going one mile on Aug. 30, 2018, at Del Mar. He won again in his next race, taking an allowance/optional-claiming race by a neck from off the pace in October 2018. Air Strike then stepped up to stakes competition and finished second in the Zia Park Derby in November and then sixth in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes in December.

After a three-month layoff, Air Strike returned in March 2019 and was unplaced in an allowance/optional-claiming race. After running fourth in the Grade 3 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes, Air Strike closed from far off the pace to catch Cistron in the closing strides of the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes to secure his first career stakes victory.
