Gulfstream Park, Race 10, $100,000 Dania Beach Stakes, 4:34 p.m. ET

#3 Homeland: This colt has superstar potential written all over him. After a flashy debut, he came back to finish second in stakes company last out at Aqueduct. What was most impressive about that race was that Homeland sat off a very slow pace and was the only horse to make a move from the back of the field. He should’ve probably won that race but seemed to flatten out just a touch late and was beaten just a head by Pixelate, a horse who’d had a much better trip throughout. Other positives here include the presence of new rider Jose Ortiz as well as this horse getting Lasix for the first time. Trainer Bill Mott has a ton of success, as many trainers do, when his horses run for the first time on Lasix. Expect another step forward here from a horse who could potentially serve as a late multi-race single.

Gulfstream Park, Race 12, 5:34 p.m. ET

#3 Kingsville: There is a ton of pace signed up for the Saturday finale at Gulfstream. The race also features a couple of bona fide closers who could benefit from a dream setup. The horse with the most upside, in my view, is Kingsville. Not only does he have the second-highest late speed rating in the field, he’ll also be making his first start for trainer Elizabeth Dobles. Her starters have won at nearly a 40% clip when sent out for the first time. This will be Kingsville’s first start in nearly nine months. While there isn’t anything flashy on the work tab, I would not be surprised to see this horse picking off horses late. Rider Victor Lebron got off to a slow start at the meet but he has an excellent 21% win rate over the past month. I’m going to put some win money on this horse and use him in exotics with a couple of the other logical contenders who figure to also benefit from the fast early pace.
