#5 Wendell Fong: There was a time last year when I was absolutely obsessed with this horse. I thought he was primed to vault himself to the top of the 3-year-old sprint division but he stalled just as he entered deeper waters against tougher graded stakes runners. He’d been away since last July but came back with what looked to be a very strong return effort last month in the Hot Springs Stakes. He finished third there but he did cover more ground than any other horse in the field, he had no pace to run into, and it was just his first start off a long break. Still, he registered his second-highest career Equibase Speed Figure (103) and Beyer Speed Figure (94) in that spot. If we get the kind of logical step forward we expect in his second start back, he could be primed for a huge race on Saturday. Trainer Jeremiah Englehart wins at a 26% clip with horses racing second off a long layoff. Wendell Fong will also have plenty of pace to run into here and he’s ideally drawn. Another variable that I like here is that he ran his best career race on a sloppy track last year. It is expected to rain in Hot Springs late Friday and into Saturday.

#7 Queen Nekia: This mare has looked like a completely different athlete since being claimed a few races back. She followed up a six-length allowance win with another strong score against tougher allowance company in her next race. If you watch the replay of the Royal Delta Stakes last out, she didn’t break all that well and had to be moved up into the race a little earlier than her jockey would’ve liked. Despite that early move and the eventual winner, Cookie Dough, sitting a dream stalking trip in the clear, Queen Nekia had plenty of kick late. In fact, it looked like she might even win the race with about 50 yards to go. I’m convinced that with the improvement we’ve seen from her combined with being fresh off a two-month break, we’re going to see a big race out of her on Saturday. Her price should be fairly large, too. So, let’s take a swing and hopefully connect with Queen Nekia.
