America’s Best Racing and handicapper (and avid gambler) Monique Vág team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend.
Vág will identify her top picks as well as at least one longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet. She also will occasionally look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.
This Weekend’s Bets
Saturday, Feb. 29
#10 Munchkin Money: She’s been racing really well lately, but unfortunately has been left with a little bit too much work to do in deep stretch. This mare is at her best working out closing efforts, and with quite a few entered in here that will likely be vying for early positioning, a speed duel upfront might be likely. This mare will be closing late – let’s just hope she can pass some tired horses and get up in time to pull off a nice upset.
#8 La Signare: This mare unfortunately got out a step slow in her last start at Fair Grounds, which ended up costing her some valuable lengths late. Expect a much quicker break on Saturday, and I would not be surprised to see her controlling this race on the front end. Her last victory came when wiring the field, and she certainly possesses enough early speed and talent to get the job done today. With a clean break and better positioning she could certainly be a factor.
#7 Abscond: She has had some struggles at the start of her races, including stumbling out of the gate in her most recent. Overall, though, she’s been racing very well, and her win in the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes last fall was impressive, especially since her connections entered her there off of only a maiden win and a runner-up finish in an overnight stakes. Expect her to be put into play early in this race just as she was in the Natalma – and due to the large field size, she should offer a decent price at post time.
#6 Spice is Nice: She could not have looked more impressive in her debut race, opening up to a 12-length victory and completely crushing at Gulfstream Park back in January. She draws a great post to work out a stalking trip just behind the speed of the rail horse. Look for this filly to take a ton of action (rightfully so) and most likely offer up a short price at post time, but she does look like a very logical single in the pick 4 or pick 5.
Favorite Sports Pick of the Weekend
Saturday, Feb. 29
NBA: Orlando Magic @ San Antonio Spurs
PICK: Spurs moneyline (odds TBD): The Magic are in contention to make the playoffs this season, but definitely need to get some wins to try and secure a postseason berth and some better seeding. Today they take on a Spurs team also fighting for that eighth and final playoff spot, but this time in the Western Conference. San Antonio will need to go on a winning streak to leapfrog some teams currently ahead of them in the standings.
In what should be a very close game, look for the Spurs to get things done at home, as the Magic have struggled on the road, posting an 11-18 record thus far.
