Laurel Park, Race 6, $100,000 Richard Small Stakes, 2:51 p.m. ET

#1 Bonus Points: A nice field assembles for this one on Saturday including a few graded stakes winners like Sunny Ridge and Adventist. But we’re going to go with the horse who has the best form over the dirt at Laurel and that’s Bonus Points. Not only is he a winner of the Maryland Million Classic, he also posted his two best Equibase Speed Figures at Laurel and he put up a 95 Beyer Speed Figure when winning the John Campbell Stakes here in February. He’s the kind of horse who does best when he can sit off the pace behind some speed. There isn’t as much speed in this race as I’d like to see but he should still be able to save ground and call on some of his back-form here to get up in time.

#2 Final Proof: One of my favorite maiden angles is betting back second-time-starters who showed speed on debut and then tired late. Here’s one who fits the mold. Final Proof returns for 42% second-time out trainer Dale Capuano after flashing speed on debut. This horse has some nice pedigree too. He’s a half-brother of Matt King Cole who was a winner at 2 and then came back to finish fourth in the Wood Memorial. He was also a two-time winner at Laurel. This barn is hot and generally does well with 2-year-olds. Fire away.
