#3 Cleopatra’s StrikeWe collected nicely last week on a filly taking a step up in class when Competitionofideas won the American Oaks at Santa Anita. We’re gonna stick with a similar approach here, going with a horse who’s shown improved form as he moves to the barn of the always-dangerous Phil D’Amato (23 percent sending horses out for the first time). Cleopatra’s Strike has been working well for his Southern California debut and he’ll be ridden by top turf jockey Flavien Prat. When up for D’Amato in graded stakes, Prat has won nine races from 38 starts and, incredibly, he’s hit the board in 21 of those races. These are deep waters but you’re going to get an extremely fair price on this horse. Beware of the class-standouts in here — Next Shares and Liam the Charmer — they’re both tough but far from unbeatable.

#9 Kylemore: This is a bit of a pace play on another horse on whom we should get a solid price. Kylemore’s game is pretty simple — if he can get to the lead without much difficulty, he’s going to be a threat. He wired an allowance field at Del Mar back in September and ran pretty well when wide here at Santa Anita two races ago. There’s a pretty good chance he gets to the lead on Saturday or, at the very least, relaxes just behind Show Me Da Lute. But that one comes back as a first time gelding and might try to sit a more relaxed trip under jockey Joel Rosario. The other thing I like with Kylemore is the set of fast drills he’s registered since his last start. Expect him to gun it from the gate and here’s hoping he hangs on for a nice chunk of the purse.
