Oaklawn Park, Race 9, $350,000 Essex Handicap, 6:29 p.m. ET

#6 Heavy Roller: If you’re looking for the “in-form” horse, it’s hard to argue than anyone is coming into this race as sharp as Heavy Roller — the question is whether he can actually make the class jump into company that features several horses who’ve consistently been racing against tougher. I certainly think he can. Since coming back off a short break earlier this year, he’s looked like a completely different horse. Trainer Joe Sharp, who is having himself quite a meet at Oaklawn, has clearly moved this horse up. Though both of his recent strong efforts came over a wet track, I wouldn’t worry about the surface having been a lone-aiding factor, especially since he hadn’t previously hit the board in three races over a wet track. The faster they go early, the better for Heavy Roller.

Oaklawn Park, Race 10, $750,000 Rebel Stakes, 7:06 p.m. ET

#7 Our Braintrust: All eyes will be on 2-year-old champion Game Winner in the second division of the Rebel Stakes. But given that this his first start of 2019 and that some reports have suggested his stablemate Improbable has surpassed him (in terms of both their training and expectations), this feels like the right Baffert horse to bet against on Saturday. Between Jersey Agenda, Market King, and Omaha Beach, the pace should prove at least as lively as the one that Our Braintrust sat off of in the Withers Stakes. Despite finishing third there, Our Braintrust fought hard and had excuses in his first try around two turns. Since adding blinkers, he’s been working great in the mornings and if that translates to the afternoon he could be pretty tough to hold off here. I also really like the progression of Laughing Fox and will be using him on all tickets with Our Braintrust.
