Churchill Downs, Race 6, $250,000 Wise Dan Stakes, 8:37 p.m. ET

#13 Cullum Road: Talk about a fun betting race. This field is loaded and there are a number of ways you can go, especially when constructing some of your exacta and trifecta tickets (check those out below). I settled on Cullum Road because I think he represents the horse that’s in the best current form, he looks like he’s turned a corner and he should take a step forward with John Velazquez taking over the reins from Reylu Gutierrez. He should also enjoy the firm going at Churchill Downs. Only twice in his last eight races has he not run over soft ground, and one of his best races was two back at Keeneland when he posted a career-best Beyer Speed Figure in an allowance race. Going back to last year, he ran another nice one at Aqueduct going a mile and an eighth. This could set up quite nicely for him.

Churchill Downs, Race 8, $600,000 Stephen Foster Stakes, 9:47 p.m. ET

#1 Thirstforlife: This is another deeply talented field and again I’m going to go with a horse who looks like he’s sitting on a big race – even if he doesn’t have the caliber of résumé that horses like Seeking the Soul and Yoshida come in with. What I’m drawn to with Thirstforlife is his undeniable affinity for Churchill Downs. If you put a line through the races at Parx, Fair Grounds, and Oaklawn, this is a horse who has consistently fired big numbers dating back to last spring. The common denominator in most of his best races is that they were run on this track. Seeing him return to form last out at Churchill and reach a new career top off a short layoff has me thinking that he’s primed for an even bigger performance on Saturday. He’s also drawn the rail and can save ground while sitting just off of likely pacesetters Alkhaatam, Gift Box, and Tom’s d’Etat. You’re going to get a big price here and this is a horse who has every shot at grabbing a slice.
