Betting an East Coast Invader in Shoemaker Mile

The rules are simple. “Win” a race in the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, and you’re “in” the Breeders’ Cup with all expenses paid.

The first North American race in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series is the $500,000, Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes on Memorial Day at Santa Anita Park. The one-mile race offers a “Win and You’re In” berth to the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, and this bonus prize — plus the rich purse — has attracted a high-quality field of nine horses.

Eight of the entrants are tried-and-true California milers who have enjoyed prolonged success on this racing circuit. There’s #1 Ohio and #9 Bowies Hero, the last two winners of the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at this course and distance. There’s #5 Catapult, runner-up in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Mile. There’s #2 Sharp Samurai, a four-time graded stakes winner making his 2019 debut, plus #4 River Boyne and #6 Bolo, who can boast two wins apiece at the graded stakes level.

And then there’s the one shipper from the East Coast: #8 Delta Prince.

Whereas the California contenders seem evenly matched and have taken turns beating each other, Delta Prince is bringing fresh form lines from New York, Florida, and Kentucky, where the best turf horses in North America tend to race. Two starts back, Delta Prince led into the homestretch of the 1 3/16-mile Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational, but weakened in the final furlong to finish third behind the high-class runners Bricks and Mortar and Magic Wand.

Delta Prince’s weakening finish was understandable since 1 3/16 miles is farther than he prefers to run. When trainer Jimmy Jerkens cut the son of Street Cry back in distance for the Grade 1 Makers’ 46 Mile at Keeneland, the result was impressive — Delta Prince unleashed a big rally from off the pace to win going away by 1 ½ lengths.

Having cracked the trifecta in 12 of his 13 starts, Delta Prince has consistently held his own against some of the best turf milers in North America. The Shoemaker Mile will mark his first start in California, but with victories at Keeneland, Woodbine, Saratoga, and Gulfstream Park under his belt, Delta Prince seems to bring his best no matter where he runs.

Compared with the field he faced in the Pegasus World Cup Turf, Delta Prince will arguably be taking a drop in class for the Shoemaker Mile, and racing at a flat mile should set him up for a big effort. I’m also a fan of the rider switch to Joel Rosario, since Rosario rides these California turf courses quite well and frequently encourages his mounts to produce big finishes down the lane.

Assuming he starts at 5-2 or higher, I’ll be happy to bet Delta Prince to win in the Shoemaker Mile. But I’ll also key him on top in exotic wagers like the exacta and trifecta while emphasizing Sharp Samurai and Catapult underneath.
