Belle's Best Bets: A ‘Lucky’ Bet at Belmont, Exciting Runner at Woodbine

America’s Best Racing, Belle Premium American Vodka, and handicapper (and avid gambler) Monique Vág team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend.

Vág will identify her top picks as well as at least one longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet. She also will occasionally look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.

Belle Premium American Vodka is the official vodka of America’s Best Racing. The American-made, American-owned vodka is distilled in Virginia, the birthplace of Thoroughbred breeding and racing in North America. The company’s mascot, Belle ‘n Tonic, broke her maiden at Laurel Park in Maryland in April 2018.

This Weekend’s Bets

Saturday, Sept. 21

Best Bet

Belmont Park, Race 6, 3:45 p.m. ET

#4 Candy Tycoon: He is the only colt in here with racing experience and that may pay off for him in a small field. His debut race was fine, but he did have an excuse when getting bumped at the start. Trainer Todd Pletcher has incredible numbers on horses making their second career start (29%), removing blinkers (23%), and in a beaten favorite's next race (27%). He will be really tough to beat, although the odds will reflect that.

Best Bet

Belmont Park, Race 10, $300,000 Kelso Handicap, 5:57 p.m. ET

#5 Prince Lucky: He has struggled with racing wide in two of his three most recent efforts. Luckily for this gelding, the wide trips and racing trouble have occurred when he is not on the front end. Look for him to flaunt some early speed and vie for early positioning upfront. The last three starts where he got to the lead and was able to rate, he won by open lengths.

Longshot Play

Churchill Downs, Race 11, 5:57 p.m. ET

#5 Go Stormin Girl: Her debut race on the turf was solid. She broke out of a tricky outside post but was not a factor in the stretch. If she works out a similar trip to her debut, the added furlongs today could benefit her late running style. Her recent works look quick which could work to her advantage in a field of very green two-year-old fillies.

Longshot Play

Woodbine, Race 7, $100,000 Victorian Queen Stakes, 4:28 p.m. ET

#7 Wake Up Maggie: The added furlong on Saturday could help this filly execute a perfect stalking trip. She reunites with jockey Justin Stein, who was on board for her two best efforts, in the race. The price at post should be generous because she only has one win, and her speed figures pale in comparison to some of the others, however with enough front-running horses entered there may be enough early speed for her to work out the perfect trip.

Favorite Sports Pick of the Weekend

Sunday, Sept. 22

National Football League:  Cincinnati Bengals @ Buffalo Bills

PICK: Buffalo Bills -6 (-110): The Bills have looked good thus far in the 2019 season and dating back to the final two games of the preseason they have won four straight. The Bengals are coming off a game where they allowed 41 points at home to the 49ers and have not been able to establish any semblance of a run game this year yet. It looks to be a long day for the Bengals versus a solid Bills passing defense. Look for Buffalo to cruise.
