When it comes to making money when handicapping races and betting on horse racing, it’s all about picking winners. Tordjman – DanonymousMan to those who follow him on Twitter – is one of the brightest young minds in the game.

Each Week, Tordjman will provide readers with his two best bets of the weekend and strategies for how to bet them. Tordjman will keep track of his return on investment (ROI) throughout the year and, as a bonus, he will also provide picks for a selection of the key races on the Triple Crown trail and the road to the Breeders’ Cup. Dan was able to manage a positive ROI for his plays in 2016 but was in the red for 2017. How will he do in 2018? To find out and to play along, come back every week and be sure to follow Tordjman on Twitter.

Saratoga Race Course, Race 6, 3:49 p.m. ET

#6 Derby Date (12-1): We’re going to get a square price on this second-time starter for D. Wayne Lukas who finished a well-beaten seventh in his debut. The only horse to come back out of that race (the horse who finished sixth) ended up winning next out. Derby Date could certainly be forgiven for that first try as he chased a runaway winner and faded. The speed he showed there should benefit him here as he faces a field mostly comprised of first-time starters. You’re also going to get a major rider upgrade to Luis Saez.

Saratoga Race Course, Race 9, 5:40 p.m. ET

#2 Phi Beta Express (5-1): Some might be quick to overlook this one off of two consecutive subpar efforts, but it’s important to note that one of those tries was on the turf (he races on dirt here) and the other was with a different rider aboard last time out. This horse reunites with regular rider Kendrick Carmouche here at a level and distance that he’s had success at before. Phi Beta Express also won his Saratoga debut in July 2017in wire-to-wire fashion here. We might experience some déjà vu here as he might be the main speed in this spot.
