When it comes to making money when handicapping races and betting on horse racing, it’s all about picking winners. Tordjman – DanonymousMan to those who follow him on Twitter – is one of the brightest young minds in the game.

Each Week, Tordjman will provide readers with his two best bets of the weekend and strategies for how to bet them. Tordjman will keep track of his return on investment (ROI) throughout the year and, as a bonus, he will also provide picks for a selection of the key races on the Triple Crown trail and the road to the Breeders’ Cup. Dan was able to manage a positive ROI for his plays in 2016 but was in the red for 2017. How will he do in 2018? To find out and to play along, come back every week and be sure to follow Tordjman on Twitter.

Fair Grounds, Race 9, $200,000 Lecomte Stakes, 6:03 p.m. ET

#10 Instilled Regard (4-1): Kentucky Derby prep season kicks off in Louisiana with a pretty solid field for January. Highly regarded Principe Guilherme (#12) draws pretty wide here and might have to work a bit to cross over, knowing that multiple graded stakes-winning filly Wonder Gadot has speed to his inside, along with Analyze This Jet and Believe in Royalty. In the meantime, the horse who might get overlooked is Instilled Regard. You shouldn’t overlook him though, as he finished within a length of Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Solomini in the Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity, which was ultimately won by recent Sham Stakes winner McKinzie. That race was strong, and I’d take it as a good sign that multiple Eclipse Award winner Javier Castellano makes the trip down to New Orleans for this mount.

#5 The Player (3-1): This horse was a model of consistency in 2017, finishing in the money (in the top three) in four of six starts. His only real clunker was his last race against much tougher company in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap. There doesn’t appear to be much speed in this race, but The Player is generally forwardly placed so that should help in a spot where it seems unlikely that any horse is going to be able to close from too far out of it. He’s the clear class of the race and should cruise if he’s fit and gets the right trip.
