America’s Best Racing and handicapper (and avid gambler) Monique Vág team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.

For some posts, Vág will try to identify a longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet. She also will look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or occasionally try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.

This Weekend’s Bets

Saturday,  June 9

Best Bet

Belmont Park, Race 4, Acorn Stakes, 1:24 p.m. ET

#3 Monomoy Girl: If there were any doubts about her ability, seeing her dominate in the Longines Kentucky Oaks out of post-position 14 should make you a believer. This filly has won over various surfaces, at numerous tracks and distances, from off the pace or controlling it, and there’s no reason not to think she’ll handle “Big Sandy” and her competition there with ease again today.

Best Bet

Belmont Park, Race 6, Jaipur Invitational Stakes, 2:43 p.m. ET

#1 Stormy Liberal: Drawing the rail post position is really nice for this horse who should get the jump on his main rivals as most will be breaking from an outside gate. At a sprinting distance as short as six furlongs, ground-saving trips or being close to the lead are usually where you want to be as the turns come up very quickly and racing wide is usually a recipe for disaster. The price at post time will be fair.

Best Bet

Belmont Park, Race 11, Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, 6:46 p.m. ET

#1 Justify: I think the Preakness was an excellent test to show his grit and perseverance, and I love how he handled being tested by a very respected horse in a battle early. A Triple Crown is a very real possibility, and I think he will capture it in front-running style leading every step of the way.

Longshot Play

Belmont Park, Race 13, 8:07 p.m. ET

#11 Hammerin Aamer: What intrigues me about this colt is how much betting action he’s attracted in his recent five starts. He usually puts forth a consistent effort and that’s great to see when backing a longshot. The added sixteenth of a mile looks to be advantageous for this runner as he does seem to have a pretty nice late finishing kick, which hopefully gets him home at a big price.
