Go Big in 2018 with Exciting New Shooters for Kentucky Derby Futures

One of the most exciting pit stops on the Road to the Triple Crown involves laying down some cash on a futures pick for the 2018 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Through April, America’s Best Racing will bring you up to date with the changing odds and notable entries at two of the main Kentucky Derby future wager bookmakers in Las Vegas – the books at Wynn Las Vegas and William Hill.

We’ll revisit these odds when new sheets are released (usually after a major prep race is completed). With each passing prep race, the number of viable Derby contenders will shrink, but as of now there are literally hundreds of horses out there that carry the dreams of owners and gamblers alike to find the Churchill Downs winner’s circle somewhere around 7 p.m. ET on May 5 – and some of them may have not even raced yet. Las Vegas-based ABR contributor Richard Eng delved deeper into the allure of the Kentucky Derby future bet in a recent column.

Last weekend, Greyvitos shipped in from California after surviving the wildfire tragedy at San Luis Rey and impressively won the $400,000 Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park on Dec. 17 to earn 10 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby. There won’t be another points race until New Year’s Day, when the Grade 3 Jerome Stakes is held at Aqueduct. But that doesn’t mean that activity has slowed – far from it.

As BloodHorse columnist Steve Haskin notes, many of the top trainers are testing their best 2-year-olds at year’s end to determine just how much potential they have as 2018 Derby prospects. Consequently, there’s been a lot of movement on Wynn’s Kentucky Derby futures sheet (William Hill’s is unavailable as of Dec. 20). Without further adieu, here’s the latest update on which horses Wynn Las Vegas favors as early prospects for the 144^th run for the roses.

Dec. 20 Odds Leaders:

Notable Changes:

McKinzie: Odds dropped from 20-1 on Dec. 7 to 11-1, now second among all contenders on Wynn’s sheet. This came after he was elevated to first in the Dec. 9 Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity when Solomini was disqualified to third due to interference with third-place finisher Instilled Regard, who was placed second. This highly regarded colt may have tired slightly late but overall ran gamely in the Cash Call Futurity, battling all the way to the finish line with his two rivals, and he’s officially 2-for-2 after a visually impressive maiden win back in October. ABR’s Mike Curry analyzed his chances as a live Kentucky Derby horse in his most recent Making the Grade profile.

Solomini: “He was the better horse today,” trainer Bob Baffert said after Solomini was placed third by Los Alamitos stewards in the Cash Call Futurity, giving stablemate McKinzie the Grade 1 victory. The Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up still has some maturing to do, and in particular he has to correct his tendency to lug in when straightened out and running close to horses. But this son of Curlin is certainly one of Baffert’s most promising colts in what appears to be a typically loaded arsenal for the 2018 Kentucky Derby preps. His odds slipped from 30-1 to 18-1 in Wynn’s latest sheet (Instilled Regard’s odds also took a plunge after the Cash Call Futurity, going from 125-1 to 65-1).

Greyvitos: This Virginia-bred Malibu Moon colt drew attention when he broke his maiden in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 11, earning an impressive 110 Equibase Speed Figure in his third career start. After that win at seven-eighths of a mile, he was stabled at San Luis Rey Training Center and had to be evacuated when wildfires swept the complex. After that harrowing experience, it would certainly be understandable if he were to throw in a mulligan when shipped to Oklahoma for the Springboard Mile. Instead, he tracked just behind several horses from the far outside post position through the backstretch and then moved up and drew clear to post a sharp 2 ¼-length win over Combatant. Suitably, his Kentucky Derby future odds at Wynn have plunged to 60-1 from 175-1. His pedigree also is encouraging for stretching out in future races, as his sire Malibu Moon already has a Kentucky Derby winner in 2013 champ Orb, and his dam (mother) Snow Top Mountain was a solid stakes winner on turf at distances up to 1 1/8 miles.

Combatant: This Steve Asmussen-trained Scat Daddy colt was the 2-1 favorite in the Springboard Mile, and he put forth a solid effort, stalking the early pacesetter on the inside through the far turn before angling out and churning on to get second behind Greyvitos. He entered the Springboard Mile off of a 2 ¼-length win in a one-turn mile maiden special weight at Churchill Downs on Oct. 29, which was his second career starts after finishing a good fourth in his debut at the same track and distance. Given that the Springboard Mile was his first two-turn race, he should show improvement next out. His odds have been adjusted down to 85-1 from 150-1 on Wynn’s book.

Principe Guilherme: Another Steve Asmussen trainee, he was discussed in this blog as one of “Five to Watch” a month ago after he broke his maiden by 6 ¼ lengths at Churchill Downs on Nov. 11. In his second start on Dec. 16 at Fair Grounds, this son of leading sire Tapit romped in a one-mile and 70-yard allowance/optional claiming race by 11 ¾ lengths. His dam (mother) was Grade 1-winning sprinter Aubby K, but he easily handled his first start around two turns and was geared down by Florent Geroux well before the finish line. He is therefore now the co-fifth choice at 20-1 odds on Wynn’s Derby futures sheet after sitting at 45-1 on Dec. 7.

Five to Watch:

Marconi: Sitting at 50-1 odds on Wynn’s sheet, this $2 million purchase (as a yearling in 2016) is the first of four 2-year-olds trained by Todd Pletcher on this list, reflecting the fact that the seven-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner is starting to roll out his own East Coast squadron for the Kentucky Derby at tracks in New York and Florida. Another Tapit colt, he finished second in his debut at Aqueduct on Nov. 17 and then showed expected improvement when winning by 5 ½ lengths on Dec. 15 at the same track. Intriguingly, both of those starts were at 1 1/8 miles. He’s owned by the Coolmore group of Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith along with Florida’s Bridlewood Farm, the same connections that own Grade 1-winning juvenile filly Mooshine Memories. This colt has a pedigree that practically hollers out “Kentucky Derby!” as his dam (mother) is also the dam of the great Mucho Macho Man. That superstar horse finished third in the 2011 Derby, second in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic at the Derby’s mile-and-a-quarter distance, and then first in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Noble Indy: Pletcher’s second shooter is a WinStar Farm homebred who was reluctant to load and fractious in the starting gate when sent off in his career debut on Dec. 3 at Gulfstream Park, but he recovered to win easily by 8 ¾ lengths in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race. He is from the first crop of young sire Take Charge Indy, the 2012 Florida Derby winner and a son of elite sire A.P. Indy. There are several distance runners on his dam’s (mother’s) side of the family as well. He’s currently offered at 85-1 odds by Wynn.

Navistar (Lauren King/Gulfstream Park)

Navistar: This Pletcher trainee finished second in his career debut on Oct. 20 at Belmont Park and then returned to score at Gulfstream in a one-turn mile maiden race by 1 ½ lengths on Dec. 16. He’s a 60-1 choice in Wynn’s book and is owned by Robert LaPenta, who also owns another current top Kentucky Derby contender in Remsen Stakes winner Catholic Boy. Pedigree-wise, he’s a son of 2012 Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags and his dam (mother) is a half-sister to Canadian champion filly Delightful Mary and millionaire Delightful Kiss, so the bloodlines are there to help this colt handle two turns in his next start. He, along with Noble Indy, is expected to move on to an allowance/optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park in January before possibly targeting the Feb. 2 Holy Bull Stakes, a Derby points race.

Vino Rosso: This colt is owned by Mike Repole’s Repole Stable and Vincent Viola’s St. Elias Stable, who have had a lot of Grade 1 successes with Todd Pletcher-trained horses in years past, but never together. A son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, he scored a workmanlike 2 ¾-length win in his first career start going seven-eighths of a mile at Aqueduct on Nov. 11, sitting in fifth early on the outside of horses and taking command at the top of the lane en route to the victory. You’ll get 85-1 odds at Wynn this week in advance of his next start on Friday, Dec. 22, at Tampa Bay Downs, where he’s entered in a one-mile and 40-yard allowance/optional claiming race. He’s got very enticing bloodlines, as his sire, Curlin, currently is one of the very best in getting long-distance runners and his dam (mother) is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Commissioner, who just missed winning the Belmont Stakes in 2014. (Editor's note: Vino Rosso won by 2 ½ lengths in that Dec. 22 allowance at Tampa as the 1-20 favorite and will be nominated to the Sam F. Davis Stakes on Feb. 10.)

Tricks to Doo: This Into Mischief colt shipped in from Laurel Park to compete in the Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 16 and rolled to a 7 ¼-length win, earning a 106 Equibase Speed Figure. Prior to that, he won at Laurel by 5 ¾ lengths despite racing with a broken rein, and in his career debut at Keeneland he also ran well, finishing third. All three of these races have been at three-quarters of a mile, so it’s an open question as to whether he will be able to display the same talent at longer distances, although he showed a nice burst of acceleration in Tampa Bay Downs’s stretch when let loose in the Inaugural. Into Mischief has had his most success as a sire with middle-distance horses such as Goldencents and Practical Joke, and this colt’s dam is a half-sister to Grade 1-winning sprinter Her Smile. His owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, have on the other hand experienced the joy of Churchill Downs’s winner’s circle on the first Saturday in May with 2006 Kentucky Derby champ Barbaro. He’s offered at 75-1 odds by Wynn.

Navistar: Este entrenado por Pletcher llegó segundo en su carrera de debut el 20 de Octubre en Belmont Park y luego retornó triunfalmente en Gulfstream en una carrera sobre milla en no ganadores venciendo por 1 ½ cuerpos el 16 de Diciembre. Es una opción 60-1 en el libro de Wynn y es de propiedad de Robert LaPenta, quien tiene también a otro aspirante importante al Kentucky Derby en el ganador del Remsen Stakes, Catholic Boy.
