When it comes to making money when handicapping races and betting on horse racing, it’s all about picking winners. Tordjman – DanonymousMan to those who follow him on Twitter – is one of the brightest young minds in the game.

Each Week, Tordjman will provide readers with his two best bets of the weekend and strategies for how to bet them. Tordjman will keep track of his return on investment (ROI) throughout the year and, as a bonus, he will also provide picks for a selection of the key races on the Triple Crown trail and the road to the Breeders’ Cup. Dan was able to manage a positive ROI for his plays in 2016. Come back every week and be sure to follow Tordjman on Twitter.

Aqueduct, Race 3, 12:31 p.m. ET

#8 How’s Your Sugar (12-1): This horse took a fairly significant drop out of allowance company last out into the $25,000 claiming ranks. If you watch the replay of that race, you’ll note that he was bottled up early and then ran into some traffic again later in the race. He finished sixth but that effort wasn’t as bad as it might seem. Not only did he encounter the trip issues, he really didn’t get much pace to run into either. He galloped out fairly well and I’ve got every reason to believe he’ll improve off of that effort, facing this softer company for the second time now. It’s also a good sign that jockey Javier Castellano sticks with this one.

Aqueduct, Race 6, $200,000 Go for Wand Handicap, 2:06 p.m. ET

#2 Highway Star (2-1): Going the safe route here, as the most accomplished of these fillies tries to rebound from a difficult Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. She most certainly had excuses in that race and will obviously be facing much lighter company on Saturday. Furthermore, she’s 3-for-3 at Aqueduct and 4-for-4 at this mile distance. She’s the high weight here at 123 pounds, which is what she carried when she captured the Grade 2 Ruffian back in May, defeating eventual Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Bar of Gold.
