Betting the Kentucky Turf Cup on a $25 Budget

The $600,000, Grade 3 Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes is the annual highlight of Kentucky Downs’ boutique five-day race meet, and this year it attracted a full field of 12 grass specialists with two also-eligible entrants.

The 1 ½-mile race requires a combination of skill and stamina as horses are faced with the challenge of navigating Kentucky  Downs’ entire turf course consisting of a sharp first turn, a dip in the backstretch, a sweeping far turn, and then an arduous homestretch. The race was first run in 1998, back in the track’s early days, and has been won by such horses as Rochester (twice), Silverfoot, Cloudy’s Knight, Rahystrada, and in the past two years, Da Big Hoss.

This year’s renewal drew a competitive group of turf stayers with no clear standout. Post time is set for approximately 6:42 p.m. ET and the weather forecast is sunny with a high of 75 degrees.

Here’s now I will play the race with a $25 bankroll:

Oscar Nominated (#4, 7-2) and Taghleeb (#11, 5-1) have a class edge on the rest of the field and are the most consistent horses in terms of Equibase Speed Figures. Oscar Nominated also put forth arguably the best performance of his career nearly a year ago on this course when he won the 1 5/16-mile Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Derby by 6 ¼ lengths. Muqtaser (#3, 6-1) is in fine form and has top connections in owner Shadwell Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, although this is his first stakes attempt. I am also impressed with recent American St. Leger winner Postulation’s (#1, 9-2) recent form but don’t favor front-running horses at Kentucky Downs, no matter the distance.

All that said, my key horse in this race will be Enterprising (#7, 3-1). The 6-year-old gelding shot through on the rail in the Grade 1 Arlington Million Stakes, his most recent start, to finish fourth in a blanket run to the finish line, beaten by three-quarters of a length. I expect jockey Corey Lanerie to save as much ground as possible and keep Enterprising in a midpack position for the first 1 1/8 miles or so, and hopefully time his closing rally at just the right moment and find an opening in what should be a cluster of horses stampeding through the stretch. (Enterprising, Oscar Nominated, and Taghleeb, along with 30-1 outsider St. Louie [#10], are all trained by Michael Maker.)

With such a large field and an expected handle to match, finding a couple of longshots to mix into the ticket is a must, and mine will be Zulu Alpha (#6, 30-1) and Bullards Alley (#8, 12-1).  Zulu Alpha is taking a huge leap in class in only his third start in the U.S., but he’s won both of his races at Indiana Grand by open lengths and ran competitively in three starts on turf to begin his career in Ireland. Plus, he’s owned and bred by Calumet Farm’s Brad Kelley, who grew up in the Franklin, Ky., area where Kentucky Downs is located and is sponsoring the race for the second year in a row. Bullards Alley finished a good second to Da Big Hoss in this race a year ago and, while he rarely wins, usually can be counted on to muster a decent closing rally in long turf races. If he repeats his effort two races back when second by a neck in the 1 ½-mile Singspiel Stakes at Woodbine, he could hit the board at nice odds.

I’ll wheel Enterprising in an exacta with the other horses discussed, wagering a $2 amount with him in first and $1 with him in second – and then use $2 to key Enterprising in a $1 exacta over Zulu Alpha and Bullards Alley in hopes of cashing a $3 exacta in full with either of those longshots running second.

I’ll use the remaining $5 to place a win bet on Enterprising, expecting his morning-line odds of 3-1 to possibly inch up to around 4-1 by post time.

La $600,000, Grado 3 Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes es anualmente el momento culminante del clásico mitin de cinco días de carreras en Kentucky Downs, y este año ha convocado a un nutrido grupo de 12 especialistas en el grass incluidos dos suplentes también inscritos.
