If I had to use one word to describe the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, I would choose “unpredictable.” In recent years, the race has been a challenging one to handicap, with longshot runners triumphing at odds of 33-1, 19-1, 16-1, 9-1, and 7-1. While some favorites have won during this timeframe — Bernardini in 2006 and Street Sense in 2007 prevailed at short prices, and favored Alpha finished in a dead heat with longshot Golden Ticket in 2012 — just as many have failed, including 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
In other words, it pays to think outside the box when handicapping the Travers Stakes, and one of the best strategies is to play against horses that ran in the Haskell Invitational Stakes at Monmouth Park, particularly the winner.
While the Haskell is a prestigious race in its own right, it hasn’t fared very well as a prep for the Travers, and no horse has won both races since Point Given in 2001. In contrast, horses that prepped at Saratoga in races like the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes and Curlin Stakes have enjoyed much stronger success in the Travers, winning seven of the last 10 editions.
With all of this in mind, I think the best approach to handicapping the Travers is to downgrade the chances of the top-two Haskell finishers Exaggerator (#7) and American Freedom (#2) while upgrading the chances of the locally prepped contenders. First and foremost among them is Laoban (#13) along with Governor Malibu (#4), the top two finishers in the Jim Dandy Stakes.
Laoban is 15-1 on the morning line and could be overlooked in the Travers since the Jim Dandy marked the first win of his career and also because his front-running style was aided that day by a very slow pace. However, my feeling is that Laoban is thriving at Saratoga and finally starting to deliver on the potential that he has shown throughout his career; this wouldn’t be unexpected since he is a large horse that could be just starting to reach his physical peak. His workouts have been sharp and, although he’s drawn wide in post-position 13, I think he has a big chance to repeat his Jim Dandy effort and win this race.
As for Governor Malibu, he has endured troubled trips in his last two starts but still managed to finish fourth in the Belmont Stakes and second by 1 ¼ lengths to Laoban in the Jim Dandy. I think 1 ¼ miles is the perfect distance for Governor Malibu, who has enough speed to settle in midpack and get the jump on the deep closers. If he works out a clean trip, I think he’ll be right in the mix for victory.
I also like the chances of Destin (#8), third in the Jim Dandy Stakes; and Connect (#10) and Gift Box (#9), the 1-2 finishers in the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga. Of the latter two, I might narrowly prefer the chances of Gift Box, who didn’t get the best pace setup when beaten by Connect in the Curlin, but Connect has a better pedigree for handling 1 ¼ miles. Creator (#12), who finished last in the Jim Dandy, is also eligible to rebound if he gets a better pace setup on Saturday, while Arrogate (#1) is also worth a look after winning three straight races in California for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Arrogate’s combination of tactical speed and powerful finishing kick will be valuable in the Travers, although he’ll have to overcome the inside post position.
As you can see, there are plenty of horses to consider in this deep renewal of the Travers! But since both Laoban (15-1) and Governor Malibu (12-1) figure to be solid prices in the wagering, we won’t get too creative with trifecta and superfecta wagers, focusing instead of playing them to win and keying them in the exacta in hopes that one or both finish in the top two.
