Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity is the only points race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby series this month, offering 10 points to the winner, four points to second, two to third, and one for fourth. The race only drew five 2-year-olds, with the highly regarded Mastery a very likely odds-on favorite come post time.
Mastery (#3) is one of two horses trained by Bob Baffert in the Cash Call Futurity. The Candy Ride colt is 2-for-2 and has not been tested yet, earning an Equibase Speed Figure of 109 right out of the box when winning a six-furlong maiden race by 4 ¼ lengths at Santa Anita Park in late October, and then taking the seven-furlong Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 19 by 1 ¼ lengths under a confident hand ride from Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith. Mastery went off at odds of 3-10 in both races and I would expect similar post-time odds on Saturday as he stretches out to 1 1/16 miles.
Baffert’s other Cash Call Futurity horse, Show Me Da Lute (#4), won his only start to date in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race at Santa Anita on Oct. 29 by 1 ¾ lengths after setting the early pace and then being challenged by three foes on the far turn. He responded when straightened out to pull away, and the horses closest to him through six furlongs ended up finishing fourth, seventh, and second. Show Me Da Lute earned a 92 Equibase Speed Figure for his debut.
Show Me Da Lute is owned by Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, who along with Mike Pegram also owned his Baffert-trained sire, champion sprinter Midnight Lute. This colt is a physically imposing specimen like his father, and has a very good pedigree on his mother’s side as well. Show Me Da Lute’s dam is multiple Grade 1 winner Tough Tiz’s Sis. That makes him a full brother to Grade 3 winner Tiz Midnight, who owns the track record for the Cash Call Futurity’s 1 1/16-mile distance at Los Alamitos, set in the 2014 Bayakoa Stakes. Tiz Midnight also came within three-quarters of a length of champion Beholder in that year’s Zenyatta Stakes.
In such a short field, Show Me Da Lute should offer some value at odds of 2-1. His pedigree and connections are top-class, and his experience, albeit limited, around two turns makes him a more attractive win bet than Mastery – but truthfully the latter horse towers over this field based on the good, old-fashioned eye test. Limited to a $20 budget, I will bet $8 to win on Show Me Da Lute and hope he makes a big move forward in development, and then use him and Mastery in $3 exacta part wheel with Dangerfield (#1). Dangerfield exits the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes, where he held on to finish third behind runaway winner Gunnevera after making a decent middle move for trainer Doug O’Neill.
The other two horses entered are Bobby Abu Dhabi (#2), a maiden winner at 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar, and Irap (#5), who has finished third and fourth in two turf maiden races for O’Neill and J. Paul Reddam, owner of Nyquist and I’ll Have Another. Irap, a Tiznow colt, is a half-brother to champion sprinter and good sire Speightstown.

En un grupo tan pequeño, Show Me Da Lute debería ofrecer algún valor a dividendos de 2-1. Su pedigrí y experiencia, aunque limitada, sobre las dos curvas lo hace una apuesta a ganador más atractiva que Mastery, y es que sinceramente éste último destaca en el grupo en base solamente a un buen y anticuado test visual. Limitándonos a $20 de presupuesto, yo apostaré $8 a ganador a Show Me Da Lute y después usaré a él y a Mastery en una exacta de $ 3 añadiendo también abajo a Dangerfield (#1). Dangerfield viene de correr el Grado 3 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes, donde se resistió para llegar tercero detrás de un ganador en fuga como Gunnevera después de realizar una decente arremetida para el entrenador Doug O’Neill.
