The Turf vs Tech Handicapping Challenge is a public tournament featuring some of the best handicappers from the world of Thoroughbred racing taking on some of the best and brightest from the tech world. Many of racing's new fans are building their own companies or working on the next great mobile app and we thought it would be great to see what happens when they take on established handicappers in some of America's best races.

Stay tuned as this group of tech all-stars take on some of America's most recognizable handicappers in a winner-takes-all battle that pits the new school against the old school.

Christian Hellmers

Hellmers, a star of the “Horseplayers” reality television show on Esquire Network, won $269,640 for topping a field of 749 at the Horse Player World Series at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas on March 29.

Hellmers has been a fixture at Del Mar since his father first took him to a race at age 14. A true devotee of the laid-back, Southern California lifestyle and a vegan, Hellmers is as attuned to the spirit of racing as he is to the statistics and bases his bets on everything from mathematics to aromatherapy. For the last two years, Hellmers has come in second place at the Breeder’s Cup Betting Challenge, one of the biggest real-money betting challenges on the circuit.

Candice Hare

Candice Hare, who currently lives in Colorado, is the product analytics associate for tech startup Sumazi. She spends her time watching and analyzing races from around the world and her favorite horses are Palace Malice, Grandeur, and Silviniaco Conti.

This week our two handicappers will have a $100 bankroll with which to use on the following races on Saturday, April 5: the $1-million Twinspires.com Wood Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds, Aqueduct, Race 10; the $500,000 Carter Handicap for 3-year-olds and older, Aqueduct, Race 11; the $1-million Santa Anita Derby for 3-year-olds, Santa Anita Park, Race 8.

Wood Memorial Stakes

Yes, Social Inclusion is rewarding and fast, but this colt will be overbet off a huge win. Honor him only with Jedi worthy longshots in the trifecta and superfecta. Key the other top contenders on top while using the force to visualize 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.

$.50 trifecta - 6,8,10,11 with 5,6,7,8,9,10,11 with 5,7,9 = $22

$1 exacta - 6,8 with 9,7 = $4

$.10 superfecta - 6,8,11 with 5,6,7,8,9,10,11 with 5,6,7,8,9,10,11 with 5,7,9 = $18

Total = $44

Carter Handicap  (if FAST track only)

The top three favorites (#3 Golden Ticket, #5 Strapping Groom and #6 Sahara Sky) possess the horsepower to win, but everyone knows this so worship the two price horses - #4 Dads Caps and #7 Saturday's Charm - to swerve into 2nd or 3rd in the trifecta or lunge into 4th in the superfecta to extract the only value out of the race. I favor Dads Cap over Saturday's Charm in terms of a possible true upset for first. In case he steals it on the front end, I'll key him on top of my top 3 choices.

$.50 trifecta - 3,5,6 with 3,5,6 with 4,7 = $6

$.50 trifecta - 3,5,6 with 4,7 with 3,5,6 = $6

$.10 superfecta - 3,5,6 with 3,5,6 with 1,3,5,6 with 4,7 = $2.40

$.10 superfecta - 4 with 3,5,6 with 3,5,6 with 3,5,6 = $.60

$4 exacta - 3,5,6 with 4,7 = $24

$3 exacta - 4 with 3,5,6 = $9

Total = $48

Santa Anita Derby

Both # 5 California Chrome and # 6 Candy Boydeserve Jedi respect based on their last two races. The only value is in superfecta which means we must use the force again to pick third and fourth place to earn any type of long-term profit. Let's also cover one scenario if California Chrome crushes with a bomb in second.

$.20 superfecta - 5,6 with 5,6 with 3 with 1,2,4,7,8 = $2

$.20 superfecta - 5,6 with 5,6 with 1,2,4,7,8 with 3 = $2

$.10 superfecta - 5,6 with 5,6 with 1,2,4,7,8 with 1,2,4,7,8 = $4

Total = $8
